Richmond's legendary Strange Matter building is up for rent

State of play: For generations, the building at 929 W. Grace St. near VCU was a rite of passage for musicians and music fans in the city — so much so that it has its own Wikipedia page.

• While the venue opened as "Strange Matter" in 2009, longtime locals might remember it as "The Back Door," where Bruce Springsteen played in the early 1970s before his breakout
• Or as "Twisters" in the 1980s and 1990s, where Green Day, the Smashing Pumpkins and GWAR once graced the stage.
• It's also gone by "The Wooden Plate," "929," "Nancy Raygun" and more.

Zoom in: Despite closing nearly a decade ago, Strange Matter's windows remained plastered with old posters, handbills and peeling stickers that left the building looking frozen in time.

Yes, but: The posters are now gone and replaced by a "For Rent" sign, the first major sign of change in years.
