Meet Echo and Ozzy: Richmond's new Capitol Police pups

Zoom in: Let's meet them.

• Echo is a 3-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd who was rescued from a local shelter.
• Fun fact: His first day at the capitol was Jan. 20, the same as Gov. Spanberger.

Meanwhile, Ozzy is the baby. He's a 1-year-old Belgian Malinois-German Shepherd mix and had no working-dog experience when he got tapped for job.

• And after three months of intensive training (with help from Henrico Police), he's ready for action.

What they're saying: "Ozzy brings a new, young spirit to the department," his handler, Officer Melanie Sandoval, said in a statement.

Zoom out: Echo and Ozzy are the 15th and 16th canines to join Capitol Police's K-9 Unit that's been around since 2000.

• The pooches join a distinguished crew, which has included dogs that deployed to Afghanistan, serve with the U.S. Marines, and helped in the wake of the 9/11.
• German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, a Dutch Shepherd, and black, yellow, and chocolate labs have all served as working dogs at the State Capitol.
