The Mahjong obsession is going strong in Richmond.
Why it matters: Now there are multiple places around town where locals can play or learn how.
State of play: The game of tiles where players draw, discard and strategize toward a winning hand has long been a cherished pastime, first among Asian families, then Jewish communities.

- But the centuries-old Chinese strategy game has surged in popularity in recent years, with a whole new generation of Americans picking it up.

Let's Mahj RVA has a studio at Stony Point Fashion Park with walk-in or drop-in plays multiple times a week ($10), and regular classes and clubs.
RichMahj offers classes, private lessons and hosts monthly open plays at Blue Bee Cider for $30.
Hidden Tile Mahjong Club offers beginner lessons and open plays for Taiwanese-style Mahjong at locations across Richmond. Check their Insta for their latest dates and times. Prices can vary per event.
Gramophone Winery in South Richmond regularly hosts open mahjong play. The next one is Sunday, April 12 at 1pm.
Perk! Bon Air celebrates Mahjong Sundays on the third Sunday for "advanced" beginners, 3-5pm. $15 gets you a drink and two hours of guided play.
The Weinstein JCC offers beginners' classes on select Monday nights and Wednesday mornings, $125 for members and $150 for non-members.
- If you already know how to play, there are drop-in play sessions every Thursday at 10:30am. Free for members, $5 for non.
Lucky Sparrow offers private lessons for $75 an hour or some guided play for four players, starting around $40 per person.
