Sabrina here. I've been making my rounds to try new Richmond restaurants, and finally hit up The Brooklyn last weekend.
Why it matters: It's the ideal spot to catch up and yap with your friends, even if it's just for drinks and snacks. Though I'm still dreaming about those lamb skewers.
The big picture: The Brooklyn — which is owned by the team behind Lillian and Lost Letter, Patrick and Megan Fitzroy Phelan — opened in late November, adding another moody cocktail bar to Scott's Addition.
- One of the best parts: Stepping inside makes you forget you're in Scott's Addition at all.
- The energy felt like one of a much bigger city, but without the snobbiness.
- And I could stare at that gorgeous wood-fired oven for years.
What my friends and I got: The Amaro Falso ($9), which tastes like an elevated Coke, and Phony Negroni ($9).
- They're mocktails but you could barely tell because of how good they were. We love when places take their mocktails seriously.
- One friend got the Easterday bbq mushroom with green curry and cilantro ($18) — which is a pile of delicious, local mushrooms — and rated it a "375622 out of 10."
- I got the crispy lamb skewers placed on a bed of Szechuan and tahini yogurt ($24). I almost begged the kitchen to let me take a tub of that yogurt home with me.
The star: The Vietnamese iced coffee affogato, which includes the server pouring a coffee shot over a scoop of gelato ($12). I'd return just for that dessert.
What's next: I'm coming back for the butterflied branzino and the 14-drink cocktail menu.
If you go: It's open Wednesday-Sunday, 5-10pm, at 1616 Summit Ave.
Pro tip: Getting there right as they open will likely secure you a seat within minutes, but if you're hoping for a later dinner, get a reservation.
