The Buddhist monks' arrival in Richmond on Day 100 of their "Walk for Peace" drew thousands to City Hall on Monday.
Why it matters: They said it was the biggest crowd they'd seen yet in Virginia.
State of play: Downtown streets were packed for blocks as leader Bhikkhu Pannakara spoke of mindfulness, love and kindness while surrounded by city and state leaders.
- There were tears. Dozens of people carried flowers or oranges to give to them. Others brought Aloka, the famous peace dog, treats. One held a sign that said "We need this."
- The showing at City Hall was the culmination of a day that included a stop at South Richmond's Fire Station 17, where hundreds joined them on their trek across the Manchester Bridge.
What they're saying: "We thought we were hosting them, but they hosted us instead — through food, fellowship, and a quiet reminder of what peace looks like when it's lived," Richmond Fire Department wrote on social.
What's next: The monks will enter Henrico via Brook Road on Tuesday between 8:30-9am, per Henrico Police.
- Locals can post up between Azalea Avenue and Mountain Road, reports Henrico Citizen.
- Then they'll walk along Henry Street in Ashland near Randolph-Macon College around 5pm (timing may vary).
- There will be a community gathering at the Brock Recreation Center around 6pm, per a news release.
Through the lens: In the meantime, here are some images capturing the 100th day of the monks' 2,300-mile journey.
