City Hall's observation deck is open again — and it's free

The City Hall Observation Deck is once again open to the public.
Why it matters: For nearly six years, Richmonders were denied the sweeping (and free) panoramic views of the city from the 18th floor of City Hall.
State of play: Mayor Avula, who pledged to reopen the coveted view, announced the reopening of the observation deck Thursday.
- It's been closed since the early days of the pandemic and stayed shuttered due to enhanced security measures put in place as a response to Virginia Beach's 2019 mass shooting.
What they're saying: "Reopening the Observation Deck has been a major goal during my first year in office, and I'm so thrilled that we've been able to put the processes in place to welcome Richmonders back to this special space," Avula said in a statement.
How it works: Simply stop by City Hall on any weekday, pass through security and take the dedicated elevator to the top.
- The elevator won't let you get off on any floors outside of the deck and the lobby without a badge.
- Though technically, someone could if the elevator stops on other floors while picking other employees up.
If you go: The Observation Deck is on the 18th floor of 900 E. Broad Street and open weekdays, 10am-3pm, except during city holidays.
