Richmond was one of hundreds of cities nationwide where people held an "ICE Out For Good" protest this weekend.
Why it matters: The protests are in response to outrage over immigration officers killing a woman in Minneapolis, as well as the Trump administration's subsequent defending of its agents.
Driving the news: The Saturday protest from 50501 Virginia and RVA Indivisible saw at least 200 people gathered in the pouring rain at Maggie Walker Memorial Plaza.
- As some held signs saying "ICE out of our communities" and "ICE kills," drivers passing by on Broad Street repeatedly honked their cars' horns in support.
- Protesters also urged the crowd to push Gov.-elect Spanberger to not cooperate with ICE once she takes office.

Zoom out: 50501 Virginia and RVA Indivisible organized the Richmond event, one of at least 10 scheduled across Virginia as of Friday afternoon.
- Nationwide, at least 1,000 events were held by groups like Indivisible, 50501, Voto Latino and more.
- The mobilization was meant to "demand accountability, honor the life lost, and make visible the human cost of ICE's actions," per the Richmond event post.

The big picture: There have been at least seven instances, two of them fatal, of Homeland Security agents shooting people since President Trump surged city-by-city operations early last year.
- On Wednesday, an ICE agent in Minneapolis shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good — an ODU alumna — as she drove past immigration agents.
- Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has rejected the Trump administration's claim that the shooting was an act of self-defense as Good drove away.
- Frey later demanded that ICE "get the f**k out of Minneapolis."
On Thursday, Border Patrol agents shot two people in Portland during what officials said was "a targeted vehicle stop." Both were hospitalized.
Flashback: Since the start of 2025, Richmonders have held nearly monthly protests against Trump administration actions, including federal job cuts and U.S. intervention in Venezuela.
What's next: RVA Indivisible is planning another protest next Monday on MLK Day from 4-6pm in front of the Virginia War Memorial.
