Richmond gears up for another special election, this time for state House

Why it matters: Election season seems to never end in RVA.

Driving the news: The special election for Del. Mike Jones' House of Delegates seat is set for Jan. 6, House Speaker Don Scott announced Tuesday.

• Jones defeated Del. Debra Gardner in last weekend's Democratic primary to become the party's candidate for Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi's state Senate seat.
• To do so, he's vacating his House District 77 seat, a "strong Democratic" district, per VPAP, spanning part of South Richmond and Chesterfield.

Zoom in: So far, two Democrats have indicated they plan to run to replace Jones:

• Michelle Mosby, former Richmond mayoral candidate (and former 9th District City Council representative)
• Charles Schmidt, a self-described progressive Democrat and local attorney

Mosby and Schmidt will face off in a party primary on Sunday. Voting will take place from 10am-6pm at Richmond High School for the Arts in the city and Providence Middle School in Chesterfield.

• Additional candidates for Jones' seat have until Monday, Dec. 15 at 5pm, to file to run for the seat, per the state Department of Elections.

Of note: The Jan. 6 House special election is the same day as the one for Hashmi's seat.

• Jones will face Republican nominee John Thomas, a Chesterfield resident and former government contractor, per his website.
