Where to compost your Thanksgiving scraps in Richmond

State of play: The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority announced last week that it's taking over existing residential food scrap composting programs in Richmond and Henrico and expanding to 22 sites across the area, including in Chesterfield.

• Each site has at least one 65-gallon purple cart, plus compostable bags Richmonders can use to make it easier to haul food trash from home.
• Chesterfield residents can compost at the county's two convenience centers. Henrico residents, at the two public use disposal areas.
• The rest of the drop sites are in the city, at community gardens and some libraries.

What's allowed:

• 🦴 All food scraps, including bones, eggshells and apple cores
• ☕️ Food-soiled paper, including napkins, coffee filters and tea bags
• 🍴Certified compostable products, like utensils, plates, cups (there'll be a stamp on them)

What's not allowed:

• 🚫 Plastic, pizza boxes or pet waste

The bottom line: Don't trash your Turkey Day scraps this year. Assign your least favorite relative to bag 'em and drop 'em instead.
