Richmond mourns R&B icon D'Angelo

State of play: Born Michael Eugene Archer, the musician grew up in an evangelical family in Chesterfield and attended Manchester High School.

• His parents founded Shepherd's Heart Christian Fellowship Ministry in Chesterfield, per The Richmonder, and D'Angelo learned to play and fell in love with music in the church.
• He moved to New York when he was 18 to start his career, and his three albums — "Brown Sugar," "Voodoo" and "Black Messiah" — "were all revered as contemporary classics," per Rolling Stone.

What's next: D'Angelo was working on his fourth album when he died. It will be released posthumously, per reports.
