A special election to replace Dot Heffron, the Chesterfield School Board member who resigned this month after posting on social media about Charlie Kirk, likely won't happen until 2026.
Why it matters: Heffron's resignation drew statewide and national attention, and her replacement would influence how Chesterfield handles Virginia's most contentious education battles.
Driving the news: On Tuesday afternoon, Chesterfield School Board members unanimously decided not to petition the Circuit Court for a special election — a move that pushes the vote to next year.
- Board members initially considered holding a special election on Dec. 9, but that date conflicted with a Virginia law requiring a 45-day early voting period and another law barring special elections from overlapping with a general one.
- The Board also voted to remove Heffron — who wasn't at the meeting — from her three committee assignments, including the Appomattox Regional Governor's School's governing board.
Reality check: The special election timeline doesn't delay Heffron's resignation, which is still effective Dec. 31.
- The board will appoint an interim Clover Hill District representative who will remain in place until the special election.
- That appointment process — expected to be finalized before Jan. 1 — includes applications, interviews and community feedback before the board selects a candidate.
- It's unclear when applications will go live, as of Tuesday.
What they're saying: "While I'm proud of the work we have accomplished together, I also regret any disruption my actions may have caused," Heffron wrote in an additional resignation letter dated Friday.
- "I remain deeply committed to our schools and am grateful for the opportunity to have served this remarkable community."
Catch up quick: Gov. Youngkin and other Republican leaders have been pushing for Heffron's immediate resignation since last week.
- And it's spilled into Virginia's gubernatorial election, with GOP nominee Winsome Earle-Sears blasting Democrat Abigail Spanberger for picking up an endorsement from Heffron.
- Spanberger has denounced "making light of violence" but hasn't mentioned Heffron by name.
What we're watching: The final date for the special election has yet to be set.
