Richmonders can get free (early morning) Ubers to the airport

State of play: GRTC's free, on-demand airport Uber is part of the transit company's Zero Fare policy, which makes city buses free to ride (at least through next year).

• It's available daily from 4-6am, with a limit of one trip per day.

How it works: Get to any GRTC bus stop, open the Uber app and use GRTC's link to request the ride.

• The service will then take riders to Richmond International Airport (or vice versa).

If you're not into Uber, or traveling at normal wide-awake hours, you can catch a free ride to and from the airport on a GRTC Routes 7A and 7B via the Downtown Transfer Station.

• Sandston residents can request a free airport ride through GRTC's LINK microtransit service.

Fun fact: GRTC's on-demand Uber service launched in 2021 as a pilot to address pandemic-era labor shortages, GRTC spokesperson Ashley Potter tells Axios.

• Until December, it ran 5-6am and 11pm-2am on weekdays, offering free rides between any two GRTC bus stops when regular service ended at 11pm.
• GRTC's former spokesperson told Axios last year that the service was under-used.
