Richmond-area Kroger shoppers now have the option to get big discounts on groceries with the Flashfood app.
Why it matters: The app gets you up to 50% off meat, produce, baked goods and other perishables that are approaching their sell-by date.
State of play: Flashfood launched in 2017 with a "mission to feed families, not landfills" by connecting shoppers with groceries that are about to expire and therefore be thrown out.
- As-of this week, locals can shop the app for those soon-to-expire items at deep discounts and pick them up at 16 Kroger stores (some, like the Lombardy Kroger, aren't included).
How it works: Download the free Flashfood app, set it to your local Kroger store and start shopping.
- The app shows the items available, their sale price and sell-by date.
- You shop and pay in the app.
- Then head to the store by closing time and pick up in the designated area.
Zoom in: The selection was meat-heavy and indeed offered 50% off most items, per my perusal of the app Thursday.
- In addition to deals like a whole organic chicken for $11, most stores offered plenty of 50%-off baked-good deals, and some even had chilled prepared food at half off.

Worth noting: "Best by" or "Best before" dates refer to when the item is at the best quality, not when it's safe or unsafe to eat, according to USDA.
- Perishable foods can be good long after that date.
- If you're worried about food safety, look (and smell) for signs of spoilage, USDA advises.
The bottom line: Like the Too Good To Go app that launched in Richmond last year, Flashfood could be another tool for savvy, budget-conscious shoppers.
