I'm back with another tip for how to hack Richmond's nightlife scene, which is notoriously terrible: Follow the DJs and their Instagrams.
Why it matters: They'll post where they're playing this weekend and beyond, plus share events you likely wouldn't have known about otherwise.
Caveat: When I go out, I have two goals: Dance and hear anything from dancehall, amapiano and afrobeats to R&B, rap and reggaeton.
- So these are some of the DJs who check off those boxes.
Markus Gold: I'm still not over him sneaking in "Suavemente" at Redlight Reggae at Vagabond on East Broad Street a few weeks ago.
Infinite.Peace: I first heard him at Manchester Manifest last year and now he, along with Jaccvon, are making Helen's consistently cool again as resident DJs (I used to be a Helen's hater, don't come for me).
Well-Made: I got hip when he helped turn En Su Boca into a dancing bar for 0.2 seconds back in 2022.
Maiya: I just learned that some of her mixes come from family CD collections, which means they include Desi dance songs you'll likely never hear elsewhere.
HipHop Henry: He's at Get Tight Lounge in the Fan every Wednesday and Hot For Pizza near the Lombardy Kroger on Thursdays.
Malika: You can sometimes spot her at Marylou's rooftop in the Fan or catch her this Sunday for "Recess on the James" at the Padel Plant downtown.
OHEMGHI: Her next gig is a day party at Vagabond that includes a live all-women DJ battle.
J. Frvncis: Never disappoints.
The bottom line: The nightlife here isn't boring, you just haven't found the right DJ yet.
