Tuesday is primary day in Virginia.
Why it matters: Despite the fact that each party's candidate for governor has long been set, there's still a lot for Virginians to decide.
The big picture: You'll vote at your normal polling place. If you don't know where it is, find it here.
- Polling places are open 6am-7pm on Election Day. As long as you're in line by 7pm, you can vote.
- You'll need a form of ID, but residents who don't have one when they go to vote can cast a provisional ballot that's counted once officials verify eligibility.
State of play: Voters can cast a ballot in either party's primary — they don't have to be registered with a party.
- But in metro Richmond, there aren't any Republicans facing primary challenges.
- ICYMI, the statewide Republican ticket is set.
Zoom in: Tuesday's statewide ballot has six Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor and two for attorney general.
- Five Democratic primary contests for metro Richmond seats in the House of Delegates are up for grabs.
- Plus, Richmond city residents need to pick between two candidates for Commonwealth's Attorney and sheriff, both Democrats.
Zoom out: Early voting wrapped Saturday, and Democrats saw the highest turnout since the state expanded early voting in 2020, per the Virginia Public Access Project.
- As of June 15, over 204,500 Virginians had cast early ballots, per VPAP.
- More than 92% were in the Democratic primary.
The intrigue: Two of the highest voter turnouts by House District were in the Richmond area: HD 78 and HD 81.
- HD 81 is Henrico and a sliver of Chesterfield, where Democrat Alicia Atkins is challenging Del. Delores McQuinn. Henrico's current Commonwealth's Attorney is also a candidate for attorney general.
- HD 78 is Richmond, where the former mayor is running for lieutenant governor.
What's next: Election Day results, which we'll have for you as soon as they're available.
