Tablespoons Bakery in South Richmond is closing

State of play: A bunch of factors — including tariffs and DEI-related funding cuts — led to the closing, executive director and co-founder Elizabeth Redford wrote in a series of Instagram posts this week.

• The bakery and nonprofit's funding "essentially disappeared" this year due to grant funding cuts and pauses on DEI programs, Redford wrote.
• Her wholesale corporate contracts, which ran through diverse supplier programs, are on pause.
• And she's seeing a pull back in customer spending due to economic concerns.

Meanwhile, tariffs have inflated the cost of packing supplies and baking ingredients, while egg prices keep rising, she noted.

• The rent for the Westover Hills bakery was also set to go up at renewal early next year, and the rents are too high for another commercial space.
• She also said there's more neighborhood competition for bakeries and coffee shops than there was when Tablespoons opened in 2017.

What's next: Tablespoons will close at the end of service on May 10.

• Its May 30 "Dough Si Dough" dance is still on.
• In the meantime, the bakery is open Tuesday-Friday, 8am-1pm and Saturday, 8am-noon at 1707 Westover Hills Boulevard.
