The Lumineers' Stelth Ulvang plays intimate Carytown show

State of play: Ulvang, who has been with the Grammy award-winning folk-rock band for 15 years, likes to perform his own work at solo shows whenever he can squeeze them in, he told Style Weekly.

• Because of The Lumineers' busy touring schedule, he often has to find "creative venues" that are willing to slot him in last minute.
• They're often far smaller than the baseball stadiums and arenas he performs at while on tour.

Zoom in: In this case, the schedule and a Saturday flight out of D.C. to Europe led him to Révéler, the immersive experience/music venue/karaoke and happy hour bar in Carytown.

• The fact that Révéler has its own grand piano — in addition to his fond memories of Richmond — sealed the deal, he told Style.

What they're saying: "There's a special spot in my heart for Richmond," Ulvang told Style.

Flashback: Long before The Lumineers started playing arenas on the world stage, they played the back room at Balliceaux and Strange Matter, he told Style.

• The Lumineers also played Groovin' in the Garden and an intimate, 50-person lunchtime show at Capital Ale's Music Hall in 2012, just as the band was blowing up and would soon start booking much bigger venues.
• They wouldn't play Richmond again until 2016 at the Classic Amphitheater.
• And The Lumineers will be back again in September, as one of the headliners for the Iron Blossom Music Festival.
