Giavos family's new Richmond restaurant pays tribute to the classics

The big picture: The family bought the pharmacy building next to their flagship Stella's Grocery and across from their award-winning Greek restaurant Stella's in 2022, BizSense reported.

• But there'd been little news since then until this week, when Giavos posted the name and a sexy throwback menu to his Insta.

Dig in: Giavos says he sees the tavern as a place where one can pop in for a burger and shoestring fries for lunch and then come back for a "classically prepared piece of fish" for dinner alongside an "expertly crafted Manhattan."

• On the menu, guests can expect New York strip, a classic chopped salad, chicken paillard, and "a perfectly stirred martini."

For the design, Giavos was inspired by the building's black mirror facade to create a midcentury supper-club atmosphere.

• Think rich wood tones, checkerboard marble floors, leather banquettes, an emphasis on the details, and a moody playlist.

What they're saying: "When we were coming up with the concept, ultimately and selfishly, I just wanted to build the kind of place where I want to eat and hang out," Giavos says.

Of note: The family owns or co-owns multiple local restaurants, including Sidewalk Cafe, The Continental, Little Nickel, Perly's, Kuba Kuba and Galley.

• Stella Dikos, the matriarch of the family, who was behind many of the restaurants' and markets' recipes, died last summer. She was 82.

What's next: Lafayette Tavern should open this fall.
