From oldest to tallest: Richmond's iconic buildings

Among them: Having the oldest skyscraper in Virginia.

• The First National Bank Building, built in 1913, was the city's first high-rise. Now it's apartments.

The infamous James Monroe building has been Richmond's tallest since 1981 and is the third tallest in the state with 29 floors.

• Virginia Beach takes first place with its Westin Town Center (the only skyscraper in Virginia over 500 feet) and is followed by Capital One Tower in Tyson's.

Then there's the Dominion Energy building, formally known as 600 Canal Place, which is the fourth tallest in Virginia at 417 feet.

• It's also the newest (2019) outside of the much shorter General Assembly building that opened in 2023.
• The under-construction CoStar Tower is expected to be 425 feet tall and will knock it off its No. 2 spot in Richmond.

The fifth tallest statewide: Truist Place, the one with "SunTrust" written on the top. It's 400 feet tall and was built in 1983.

And the iconic Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, which has been up since 1978, is one of only 12 in the U.S.

Fun fact: Of the top 10 tallest buildings in the city, seven were built before the 1990s. Four are from the '70s, including City Hall.
