How Richmonders can safely use water under the boil water advisory

Here's what you need to know: Tap water is perfectly fine to use for showers, baths or hand washing, but don't drink it.

• Tap water is also OK for handwashing dishes if you add a tablespoon of bleach to a sink full of warm tap water and soak the rinsed dishes in the water for at least one minute.

Unless the tap water is boiled "vigorously" for a full minute (microwaving is fine, too):

• Don't drink it or make drinks with it — including coffee or tea.
• Don't brush your teeth with it or wash your dishes or fruits and veggies.
• Don't cook with it or make ice.

Temporary water conservation tips from the city:

• Eliminate or shorten shower times.
• Avoid unnecessary toilet flushes.
• Avoid washing clothes for as long as possible.
• Postpone washing dishes if possible.
• Check all faucets, showerheads and under cabinets for drips.

Context: The advisory currently affects nearly all areas north of the James River, including the Fan, Museum District, VCU's Monroe Park campus, Scott's Addition, Jackson Ward and parts of downtown.

• But all Richmond residents are being asked to conserve water as the core issue, which is at the Ginter Park Tank, is being addressed (so keep conserving for now).
