More snow expected in Richmond Monday evening as very cold temperatures roll in

The big picture: A winter storm dropped around 2-4 inches of snow on RVA Sunday into Monday morning before switching to freezing rain and then rain and closing area public schools through Tuesday.

• While the rain washed away most of the snow from roads by Monday afternoon, the official total recorded at the airport Sunday night was 4 inches, WTVR reported, making it Richmond's biggest snowfall in seven years.
• A second round of snow Monday evening was set to give the region another 1-3 inches as of press time.

Zoom in: The snow and ice brought downed trees and power lines and made for treacherous road conditions.

• At its peak, more than 30,000 households in the Richmond region were without power.
• Virginia State Police responded to nearly 200 crashes statewide on Sunday alone and 96 in Richmond on Monday morning, WRIC reported.
• Over at the airport, 32 flights were canceled and nine were delayed by more than an hour, per RIC.

What's next: Locals will get to enjoy extremely cold for the next two weeks, The Richmonder's Sean Sublette reports.

• Afternoon temperatures will be below freezing for the rest of the week with morning temps hovering around 10 degrees.
• Plus, there's a good chance of another accumulating snow in Richmond Friday heading into Saturday, but it's a bit too early to say for sure, per Sublette.

The bottom line: Winter is here. And it is awful — except for the snow.
