Survey: Virginians think driving high is less dangerous than drunk driving

The big picture: The Virginia Cannabis Control Authority this month released the results of its second-ever survey of Virginians' attitudes around marijuana use and driving.

• They found that residents' views on marijuana-impaired driving are largely unchanged or worse since the last survey in 2022, despite the group's recent safe driving campaigns.

By the numbers: 22% of Virginia drivers admit to driving high a few times a year or more, up from 14% in 2022.

• 34% of drivers said they rode as a passenger with a driver who was high, up from 24%.

Yes, but: The survey showed some driving stoned attitude improvements.

• 35% of Virginians surveyed this year said they view marijuana-impaired driving as "extremely dangerous" — up from 26% in 2022.
• More respondents (47% vs. 42%) report planning for a sober ride if they're going to partake, while slightly more drivers (29% vs. 22%) now believe they're likely to be pulled over if driving high.

What we're watching: The research company that conducted the survey recommended CCA focus its safe driving campaigns on the dangers and penalties of driving under the influence.

• It also recommended CCA target its campaigns at younger, single men, the group it found to be the most frequent offenders.

Methodology: The survey was conducted between Aug. 30 to Sept. 12 by market research company SSRS and is based on 783 responses
