Chesterfield has a new mascot.
Why it matters: It's the legendary (wait for it) trash panda — government name, raccoon.
The big picture: He made his debut at the 2024 State of the County last week, months after residents voted for him over the summer as part of the county's 275th anniversary celebrations.
- Their options: a raccoon, chipmunk, bear or Labrador retriever.
- The Lab came in second place, county spokesperson J. Elias O'Neal told Axios.
Zoom in: His name is Cole, an homage to the county's coal mining history, and he loves midnight snacks, per the county.
- Local artists Ross Trimmer and Mickael Broth, the same ones behind the mural at Winterfield Crossing, designed the mascot and the costume was made by England-based Mascot Makers Ltd.
