I finally gave in to the Instagram ads and went to a Candlelight concert in Richmond.
Why it matters: You should, too.
The big picture: The nationwide concerts build off the "popular music but make it classical" hype that Netflix's "Bridgerton" brought back to life with its soundtrack.
- Each concert is a tribute to a different genre or artist — think Rihanna, Adele, Christmas Carols and even "Lord of the Rings" — done via string quartet.
- And while they play, the performers are surrounded by hundreds of flickering, battery-powered candles.
Zoom in: I went to the neo soul one at the Gottwald Playhouse downtown, where the set included songs like "Ex-Factor" by Lauryn Hill, "The Best Part" by H.E.R. and "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" by Richmond's D'Angelo.
- I was on the verge of tears for essentially the entire hour, and almost fully cried hearing Frank Ocean's "Thinkin Bout You."
- I wasn't the only one, if the constant sniffles around me were any indication.
Pro tip: Go to one where the songs most excite you.
- Sit as closely to the stage as you can for the best experience (most of the candles were there) and to feel like you're at a private concert.
- It's the most expensive option (tickets prices vary depending on the venue but range from $24 to $63), but so, so worth it.
