Richmonders elected two new City Council representatives and four School Board members, according to Virginia Department of Elections data.
Between the lines: For City Council, candidates ran unopposed in the 2nd, 4th and 5th Districts.
- For School Board: candidates were unopposed in the 1st, 6th, 7th and 9th Districts.
1st District:
City Council: Andrew "Gumby" Breton, a data architect and Mary Munford, PTA board member, won with 49% of the vote, defeating Zac Walker and Paul Goldman.
School Board (Unopposed): Matthew Percival is a security engineer for the State Department and was among the 10 candidates who sought to fill the 1st District seat when Glen Sturtevant ran for state Senate in 2016.
2nd District:
City Council (Unopposed): Katherine Jordan will be settling into her second term.
School Board: Kathryn Ricard, an educator and the former William Fox Elementary School PTA president, ousted incumbent Mariah White with 58.89% of the vote.
3rd District:
City Council: Kenya Gibson, a six-year school board member, won with 39.21% of the vote, ousting incumbent Ann-Frances Lambert and defeating Maria Carra Rose.
School Board: Ali Faruk, an RPS parent, won with 58.12% of the vote, defeating Charlene Riley and Kevin Starlings.
4th District:
City Council (Unopposed): Sarah Abubaker is a 13-year district resident and former president of the Westover Hills Neighborhood Association.
School Board: Wesley Hedgepeth, a social studies teacher at Collegiate, with 44% of the precinct vote, defeated Angela Fontaine and Garrett Sawyer, who was appointed this year.
5th District:
City Council (Unopposed): Incumbent Stephanie Lynch.
School Board: Incumbent Stephanie Rizzi held her seat with 51.47% of the vote, defeating challenger Mamie Taylor, who represented the 5th district on the board after being elected in 2012 but lost her re-election campaign in 2016.
6th District:
City Council: Incumbent Ellen Robertson held her seat with 53% of the precinct vote, defeating Willie Hilliard and Tavares Floyd.
School Board (Unopposed): Incumbent Shonda Harris-Muhammed is a longtime educator and Richmonder who founded Northside Coalition for Children, a nonprofit giving teachers and students the supplies they need.
7th District:
City Council: Incumbent Cynthia Newbille held her seat with 66.75% of votes, defeating challenger Eric Sundberg.
School Board(Unopposed): Incumbent Cheryl Burke, a retired RPS teacher and principal who has represented the district since 2017.
8th District:
City Council: Incumbent Reva Trammell held her seat with 67% of the precinct vote, defeating challenger Frank Henry Wilson Jr.
School Board: E.J. Jafari, owner of African American Tours of Richmond, won with 52% of the precinct vote, defeating challenger Patrick "Cruz" Sherman, a chaplain at the Richmond Police Department.
9th District:
City Council: Nicole Jones, a former school board member appointed to City Council this year, held onto the seat with 58% of the precinct vote, defeating challenger Stephanie Starling.
School Board(Unopposed): Shavonda Dixon, an RPS graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, was appointed by the School Board after Nicole Jones took over Michael Jones' 9th district City Council seat.
