Virginia voters are sending U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine back for another six years in the Senate, defeating challenger and retired Navy Captain Hung Cao, the Associated Press reported.
Why it matters: This was Virginia's only statewide race on the ballot this year.
What's happening: Kaine, who has represented Virginia in the Senate since 2013, was favored to win the race.
Cao, who lives in Northern Virginia and works in the defense industry, beat out four other candidates for the Republican nomination in June.
Kaine has handily won his last two elections for the seat. In 2018, he beat out Corey Stewart, who Trump also backed, 57% to 41%.
In 2012, he beat former George Allen, a former governor and senator, 53% to 47% in what was viewed then as one of the most competitive races in the country.
