More than 2.1 million Virginians have already cast their ballots either in person or via mail, according to the Virginia Public Access Project.
Why it matters: That accounts for over a third of Virginia's registered voters, as of Friday.
Between the lines: The figures lag behind early voting numbers in the 2020 election, which was just over 2.8 million in the throes of the pandemic, per VPAP.
The trend is the same for Richmond, which had recorded over 41,000 early votes by Friday but more than 72,000 in 2020.
Nationwide, more than 68 million Americans have voted early this cycle compared to 100 million in 2020.
Fun fact: Early Virginia voters are more likely to be older and women, per the University of Florida's early-vote tracker.
Nearly half are voters over the age of 65. About 30% are between 41 and 65 years old.
Roughly 14%, or around 280,000, are in the 26-to-40 group while Gen Z accounts for 7% of early votes.
