You won't have difficulty finding elaborate Halloween decorations around Richmond this year.
Why it matters: Halloween seems to be the new Christmas when it comes to decking the halls.
The big picture: Overall Halloween-related spending this year is expected to reach $11.6 billion nationally, per the National Retail Federation.
- That's down from last year's record-setting $12.2 billion, but way up from the measly $7-$9 billion Americans spent between 2014-2020.
- Decorations account for the largest share of spending, followed by costumes for adults, kids, then pets (in that order).
- Average per-person spending has grown from $48.48 in 2005 to $103.63 this year.
Fun fact: Around 50% of Americans usually decorate for the holiday, per Civic Science. [Spoiler: I'm one of them (see below)].

Zoom in: Just about every neighborhood in RVA has a house where locals went all out to scare the bejesus out of you, or just offer some whimsical holiday fun (like an alien invasion).
- Here are a few of our favorites from around town.
