Virginia's next specialty license plate could celebrate the LGBTQ+ community

The nonprofit that supports the region's LGBTQ+ community is working to create a "Celebrate Diversity" license plate.

Why it matters: If it succeeds, Virginia will become one of a handful of states with an LGBTQ+ specialty plate.

The big picture: Diversity Richmond needs 450 Virginians to apply and pay for one of the plates by Jan. 1, ahead of the General Assembly's next session.

The plates are $25, or $35 for vanity plates.
$15 of every purchase would go to Diversity Richmond if it's approved.

The latest: As of Monday, 19 applications have been filed, Diversity spokesperson Skyler Foley tells Axios.

Zoom in: If the group meets the deadline, "Celebrate Diversity" with become one of nearly 350 speciality plates available in the Commonwealth.

Other specialty plates include ones for bicycle enthusiasts, diabetes, tobacco heritage, universities and military branches.
Other states with LGBTQ plates include Maryland, South Carolina, and Indiana.
