Missy Elliott's song becomes first hip-hop track transmitted to space

Fun fact: The only other song NASA has shot into space was "Across the Universe" by The Beatles back in 2008, making Elliott's song a first for hip-hop.

The big picture: "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" took about 14 minutes to travel roughly 158 million miles to Venus, Elliott's favorite planet, per NASA.

• NASA did this on July 12 through the same communications system astronauts on missions use to phone home.

Between the lines: The partnership between the Portsmouth-born singer and the space agency aligns with Elliott's tour — coincidentally named "Out of This World" — and NASA's upcoming mission to the planet of love.
