Virginia has the highest percentage of women veterans in the country

Virginia now has its first license plate dedicated to women veterans.

Why it matters: The state has the highest percentage of women veterans in the U.S. as of 2022 — nearly 16%, or more than 107,000 — per the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.

Catch up quick: The state launched the campaign to honor them via a license plate in 2022 that Virginia women vets designed. The General Assembly unanimously approved the plate last year.

It was unveiled Thursday at the Virginia War Memorial in celebration of Virginia Women Veterans Week.

Fun fact: This makes Virginia the 18th state to have a license plate specifically for women veterans, per the Department of Veterans Affairs.
