A growing number of Richmond homes are multigenerational

Multigenerational households — three or more generations under one roof — are on the rise in the U.S.
By the numbers: Just over 17,000 Richmond-area households are multigenerational, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
- Chesterfield has the highest share in the metro area at just over 7%, followed by Richmond at 6.7% and Henrico at 6.6%.
- Hanover's is 5.2%.
Worth noting: Manassas Park has the highest share of multigenerational households in the state at 12%, while nearby Arlington has one of the lowest, at 3.4%.
The big picture: Financial concerns and caregiving needs are two of the major reasons people live with their parents (and parents' parents.)
- There were 6 million multigenerational households in the U.S. in 2020, up from 5.1 million in 2010, according to census data.
