Raleigh lands its first hotel on Michelin's Key list

The Michelin Guide just updated its hotel rankings for the U.S., bestowing "key" awards on standout properties in Raleigh, Pittsboro and the North Carolina mountains.

Why it matters: Michelin Key Hotels are like starred restaurants — both are big international distinctions. U.S. hotels were first considered for keys in 2024. North Carolina restaurants weren't added to the guide until 2025.

Zoom in: Over 5,000 hotels are Michelin-ranked globally — 359 of them in the U.S.

Michelin announced Friday that four new North Carolina properties made the cut, including two local spots, bringing the state's total to nine.

How it works: Reviewers judge hotels on five criteria: architecture and interior design, service, "overall personality and character," value for the price, and "a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting."

Keys rank from one to three, with three being the best.
