On the menu today: Senegalese food from Hady's Restaurant in east Raleigh — just in time for Senegal's matchup with Norway in the World Cup. (Tonight at 8pm.)
Readers: Yes, I was inspired by Liverpool legend Sadio Mane.
Zoom in: Tucked off East Martin Street half a mile from Moore Square, Hady's menu is made up of various West African dishes and cuisines, but at its heart the restaurant is Senegalese.
What we got: I leaned heavily on the recommendations of the restaurant's staff.
They steered me toward the grilled bone-in lamb, which was tender and smoky, and topped with onions and mustard.
But it was the sides that really shined. The jollof rice was a flavor bomb in the vein of Louisiana-style dirty rice. And the collard greens — complex and spicy — were among the best I've had.
To wash it down, I went with one of Hady's housemade juices. I chose the bouye juice, a Senegalese drink made with the pulp of baobab fruit pods mixed with water and sweeteners. The sweeteners gave the drink a bit of a piña colada vibe.
