It's strawberry season in North Carolina. Got a recipe?

Strawberry season has arrived in North Carolina, and local farms are opening their fields for pick-your-own visitors.

State of play: We visited Waller Family Farm (5030 Kerley Road, Durham) on Friday, and the berries were deep red, sweet and practically falling off the plants.

• Two half-gallons cost $20.
• One of the best parts was the intoxicating fruity aroma following us through the rows. You just don't get that at the supermarket.

If you go: Strawberries typically can be picked into late May.

• Some of these fields are regularly picked clean on weekends, so it doesn't hurt to call or check social media before heading out.

What's next: Figuring out what to make with all those berries can be tricky.
