An influential figure in the Triangle's creative arts scene is returning to the apparel world with a new clothing brand and print studio in downtown Durham.
Why it matters: Before becoming one of the state's most prolific public artists — with murals and artwork across North Carolina — Gabe Eng-Goetz led the influential local clothing brand Runaway, which ended production in 2019.
- If you've seen a shirt with the word "Durm" on it, chances are it was a Runaway shirt. The brand was known for its creative collaborations with local groups, like the Durham Bulls, and parties at its downtown store during the 2010s.
Driving the news: Seven years later, Eng-Goetz and co-founder Michael Brannon are back with DURM Studio. The new venture will offer its own designs and retail store, along with a print studio creating custom work for clients.
- The studio is set to open later this summer on the first floor of an apartment building at 704 Rigsbee Ave. The area is already home to several popular bars, like Surf Club, and breweries such as DSSOLVR.
- The store will offer a window into DURM's production space and will host workshops and live screen printing sessions.
Zoom in: Eng-Goetz said he is already in the process of making their first season of designs, but the store plans to sell casual clothing, accessories and homegoods inspired by the Bull City and the Triangle.
- Eng-Goetz, a Durham native and Jordan High School alum, also plans to share 5% of the studio's profits with the Durham Public Schools Foundation
What they're saying: "I'm at a different point in my life, and Durham is at a different point as well," Eng-Goetz told Axios.
- "Part of reopening a store and having a creative studio," he added, "is a way to reconnect with Durham, with a new creative scene and with the new businesses that are that are popping up all over the area."
Disclosure: Eng-Goetz is in a relationship with Axios Raleigh co-author Mary Helen Moore.
