A wintry mix may fall on the Triangle starting tonight, and forecasters are warning to prep for the possibility of a light coating of snow and ice on the ground.
It would be the first measurable accumulation of snow or ice in central North Carolina this winter.
Driving the news: Durham and Orange counties are both under winter weather advisories.
As storms develop today, National Weather Service forecasters will dial in the specifics, allowing schools to decide whether to hold classes tomorrow.
This afternoon, the Department of Transportation will salt bridges and highways, WRAL reports.
What to expect: NWS Raleigh predicts temperatures will sink to the low-30s overnight. Up to 1 inch of snowfall is possible early tomorrow morning, before gradually changing to rain.
Not much snow is expected to stick, though the best chances are north of Interstate 85.
The cold won't linger, so ice is not expected to be a major issue this weekend.
Caveat: It may not get quite cold enough in portions of Wake County for anything but rain.
