The Carolina Hurricanes begin training camp this week, and they're opening some of the skates to the public, including the very first on-ice workout Thursday.
Why it matters: The Canes have made the NHL playoffs seven years in a row under head coach Ron Brind'Amour. The Canes are the only men's major league team in North Carolina to ever win a championship.
- They've also sold out two straight seasons at the Lenovo Center, so watching them play for free at their much smaller practice facility is a serious treat.
Zoom out: The upcoming season is looking promising for Carolina. Betting sites give the Canes some of the best odds of winning the Stanley Cup this season.
- ESPN and DraftKings have them behind only the Florida Panthers, the reigning champs who knocked out the Canes last year in the Eastern Conference Finals.
- Fanduel Sportsbook has the Canes and Panthers tied for the top slot.
The intrigue: The Canes have an exciting new defenseman to watch in K'Andre Miller.
- "He is just approaching his prime," general manager Eric Tulsky said after signing the former New York Ranger.
All the skates held at the Hurricanes' permanent practice facility in Morrisville, Invisalign Arena, are open to the public.
- Thursday: 9am and 11am practices
- Friday: 9am and 11am practices
- Saturday, Sept. 27: 9am and 11am practices
- Monday, Sept. 29: 10:30am group skate
- Tuesday, Sept. 30: 11am practice
- Saturday, Oct. 4: 10am group skate
The big picture: Renovations are underway inside Lenovo Center, the Canes' home arena. The redevelopment of the surrounding land — a major project to transform it into an entertainment district with hotels, restaurants, apartments and a live-music venue — won't begin until next year.
What's next: There are three preseason games in Raleigh.
- The season opener is Oct. 9 against the New Jersey Devils, whom Carolina beat last year in the first round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
