Construction has begun on the $180 million renovation of the North Carolina Museum of History in downtown Raleigh.
Why it matters: The project — one of several state government construction projects underway in downtown — will expand the building by 40,000 square feet and make way for 25% more gallery space.
Zoom in: The construction, funded by the state legislature, is expected to be complete in 2028.
In the meantime, however, the museum will remain closed to the public.
Other upgrades include: a more accessible entrance, new climate control systems to protect artifacts, restaurant space and additional spaces for classrooms and community gatherings.
The big picture: Public-backed construction projects can be found throughout downtown.
