Durham is on track to start construction of its next greenway trail next year, according to Sean Egan, director of Durham's transportation department.
Why it matters: When built, the Durham Rail Trail would turn 1.8 miles of abandoned railroad into a linear park that stretches north and east from downtown.
It would also connect the Ellerbee Creek Trail to the city's downtown core and onto the American Tobacco Trail.
Zoom in: Egan told Axios that the city is doing final designs now and will bid it out for construction next year.
The trail, a former rail line owned by the Duke family to reach its tobacco warehouses, is expected to be completed in 2028.
The budget for the project is around $29 million, according to the city.
