Raleigh-Durham International Airport will hold a public meeting tomorrow about the redevelopment of part of Lake Crabtree County Park, a 330-acre parcel of land it has leased to Wake County for $1 a year since the 1980s.
Why it matters: The airport's plans will affect nearly half of the property, along with nearly all of its more than nine miles of bike trails, WRAL reports.
The park could become an "entertainment destination" with a hotel, restaurants, bars and shops, though the area should still be "consistent and appropriate with the natural surroundings of the site," per the News & Observer.
What they're saying: "I am truly heartbroken," WRAL reported youth mountain biking team director Elise Freed said. "This is our home base."
Driving the news: RDU officials have interpreted that a new FAA rule means that airports must lease land at fair market value if they receive federal grants.
What's next: The Airport Authority will hear ideas from the public on how to redevelop the land tomorrow starting at 5pm in the in the RDU Center at 1000 Trade Dr. in Morrisville.
