UNC hiring Bill Belichick to be its next head football coach

Between the lines: Belichick agreed to a five-year deal pending approval by the University's Board of Trustees and Board of Governors, per UNC.

• "I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill," Belichick said in a statement.

Yes, but: There will be questions surrounding the hire and how easily Belichick, who has no experience in college football, can bring success to a program that has failed to win an ACC Championship since 1980.

• Much like former coach Mack Brown, Belichick is also in his 70s.

Zoom in: The Tar Heels finished the regular season 6-6 and 13th in the ACC.

• The team is already losing several players to the transfer portal and its incoming recruiting class is relatively small, meaning Belichick will have to revamp nearly the entire roster.

What they're saying: "We know that college athletics is changing, and those changes require new and innovative thinking. Bill Belichick is a football legend, and hiring him to lead our program represents a new approach that will ensure Carolina football can evolve, compete and win -- today and in the future," UNC athletics director Bubba Cunningham said in the statement.

What we're watching: How much money the university and its alumni will commit to name, image and likeness (NIL) deals to land recruits and transfers, given many programs have vastly outspent the Tar Heels in NIL money in recent years.

The intrigue: Belichick does have some existing connection to the university. His father, Steve, was an assistant coach for UNC during the 1950s.
