There are two kinds of families: Those who run on Thanksgiving Day, and those who don't.
If you're one of those people who enjoy running a race before enjoying an eating marathon — or if you were born or married into a Turkey Trot family against your will — here are some of the Triangle's Turkey Trot offerings this year:
- Raleigh Turkey Trot is filling up fast. The race is an 8K held near Raleigh's Ridgewood Shopping Center. Prices are $40 for those 8 and up, or $50 on race day if it's not sold out. Race starts at 8:30 am.
- Trophy Brewing's Trophy Trot, sponsored by Runologie, is a 5K through Dix Park, with the added benefit of a Trophy beer at the end of the race. The cost to sign up is $40 through Monday and $45 until race day. Proceeds of the race go to Healing Transitions, which offers recovery services to homeless, uninsured and underserved individuals facing addiction. Race starts at 9am.
- Leesville Community Turkey Trot, which funds scholarships for Leesville Road High School students, starts at 8:30am at the Harrington Grove Swim and Racquet Clubhouse in Raleigh. Pre-registration, which is $20, ends today. Otherwise, you can register on race day starting at 7:30am.
- Skinny Turkey is held at North Raleigh's Wakefield High and offers a half marathon, 10K, 5K, 1-mile walk and a Kids Drumstick Dash. Prices and start times vary.
- Birds of a Feather Trail Trot offers 2-mile and 5K trail runs at Briar Chapel in Chapel Hill, with an added bonus of post-race slice of pie and a t-shirt. Registration is open through race day. Prices and start times vary.
- TROSA's Turkey Trot, presented by Bull City Running Co., is a 5K held on the organization's campus in Durham. If spots are still available, registration, which is $40, is open through race day. Race starts at 8am.
- Turkey Chase, held in Umstead State Park, offers a 5K, 10K and half marathon for a post-turkey burn in person on Saturday, Nov. 30 or virtually all week. Prices and start times vary.
- Freedom Ride Rescue Turkey Day 5K in Garner will be held in White Deer and Lake Benson Parks. Registration for the 5K and in-person 1-mile fun run is capped at 1,000 participants, though a virtual 5K is also an option. 5K registration is $37.50, with prices increasing on Wednesday. Race starts at 8:30am.
