The southern portion of the Triangle Expressway, also known as N.C. 540, is slated to open later this month to drivers.
Why it matters: Covering more than 18 miles from N.C. 55 near Apex to Interstate 40, the expressway is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the region — giving drivers new ways to reach the fast-growing southern reaches of Wake County.
Driving the news: The new section is expected to be fully open to traffic on August 28 at 6am, according to a spokesperson for the N.C. Turnpike Authority, which will manage the road.
Yes, but: Tropical Storm Debby could affect the opening date, per the spokesperson.
What to expect: It will cost drivers with an N.C. Quick Pass transponder $8.01 to drive the full length of the Triangle Expressway from Research Triangle Park to Interstate 40 south of Raleigh, the News & Observer reported.
