The 2028 Olympic torch relay likely to stop in Phoenix

Driving the news: Wednesday, the Phoenix City Council voted to approve entering into an agreement with the Los Angeles Organizing Committee to allow the city to participate in the 2028 Torch Relay.

• For the first time, the Olympic flame will visit all 50 states before the opening ceremony.

What they're saying: "The entire nation can be proud of the games, and Phoenix will be honored to play this role in showcasing our community to the world," Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said during a council meeting.

• Gallego said she's convened a statewide committee to explore the possibility of hosting qualifying events or the city serving as a training location for international teams.

The fine print: A council information packet notes that the city would bear all costs with hosting the torch event, which would also feature a cauldron lighting.

What's next: A specific venue has yet to be selected.
