Allsup's brings its famous deep-fried burritos to Arizona

• Allsup's opened its first Arizona store in Willcox last Friday, with another coming to Douglas in a few weeks and aggressive expansion plans year in the coming years.

Zoom in: Allsup's has various food offerings but is most well-known for its deep-fried burrito filled with shredded beef and refried beans.

Flashback: I became intimately familiar with Allsup's during my 3 1/2 years in Hobbs, New Mexico, where I started my journalism career covering high school sports for the Hobbs News-Sun.

• I remember the burritos fondly and can still vividly recall the taste and sensation of biting into their crunchy, fried goodness — nothing hit the spot when you're coming home after midnight like an Allsup's burrito.

Yes, but: When I told an old New Mexico friend that Allsup's burritos are finally in Arizona and that I'm craving one, he warned me that nostalgia lies to us and they're not as good as I remember.

• I don't care if nostalgia is deceiving me. I haven't had an Allsup's burrito in 20 years and I want one.

What we're watching: Yesway CEO Thomas Trkla tells Axios that the company is "moving into Arizona in a big way" and expects to eventually be in the Phoenix and Tucson areas. Stores are mostly located in rural and suburban areas.

• Allsup's will add 130 stores in Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas over the next four to five years, Trkla says.
