Valley boasts 2 winners in Global Coffee Awards

Two Valley coffee brewers were honored in this year's Global Coffee Awards.
State of play: Tempe-based Cartel Roasting Co., which has 13 locations in Arizona and two in California, won a silver medal in the "Ready to Drink" bonus category for its cold brews.
- Cartel also won a silver in a ready-to-drink subcategory.
- That category covers all styles of ready-to-drink coffee that are prepackaged for retail sale, including immersion cold brew, flash brew, snap-chilled, milk-based lattes and nitrogen-infused (nitro) beverages.
Moxie Coffee Co. in Phoenix won a gold, a silver and two bronzes — and Cartel won an honorable mention — in the filter coffee subcategories, which focus on coffees roasted for manual and automated brewing methods.
What they're saying: Cartel's cold brew is unique in that it uses high-quality beans rather than the "throwaway" beans most people use, director of marketing Kristina Grappo tells Axios.
- "We are super proud of our production team. They have worked really hard to tweak our [recipes], especially our cold brew recipe," she adds.
How it works: Winners were selected through two days of judging in Houston last month. Participants didn't know whose brews they were tasting in the double-blind judging.
- Winners were announced earlier this month.
- The competition was for roasters in the U.S. and Canada., with separate contests for the Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Middle East and North Africa regions.
- Overall category winners from each region will face off at the world championship in Mexico in March, though the "Ready to Drink" bonus category was only for the U.S. and Canada.
