Tempe announced it has shut off outside access to its network of automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras operated by Flock.
Why it matters: The move is the latest in a growing backlash against Flock, whose camera system allows law enforcement entities to track the movements of almost anyone without a warrant.
How it works: ALPR cameras capture and store data on all vehicles that pass by, creating a national database that can be searched by anyone with access to it.
Even if Tempe officers weren't misusing the city's cameras, other agencies were capable of searching its network.
Driving the news: Tempe's announcement referenced "recent misuse of the system by two local law enforcement agencies."
