Axios Phoenix samples Guy Fieri's Flavortown offerings at Circle K

The big picture: It may come from Flavortown, but this is still gas station food — and not of the Buc-ee's brisket variety — so set your expectations accordingly.

1 elusive item: More than anything, I was looking forward to trying the mac and cheese burger, but I checked three participating locations and couldn't find one.

• The clerk at one store told me they've been flying off the shelves.

Here's what I found instead:

Sweet Heat Fried Chicken and Waffle Sandwich: The sweet waffle and the spicy chicken complemented each other well.

• I would've liked some crispiness or crunchiness from the breaded chicken, but given that it was pre-packaged food from a gas station warmer, that's probably a bit much to ask for.

Chicken Royale Sandwich with Swiss and Jalapeño: The bun was hard as a rock — that could have just been the particular sandwich I grabbed and not all of them — and there were only two jalapeños, both hugging the edge of the chicken patty.

All American Inspired Breakfast Burrito: Reminded me of a frozen breakfast burrito you buy at the grocery store. All in all, not bad.

The bottom line: Not great, but a little better than standard gas station fare, so if that's what you're looking for, dig in!

• And I still want to try the mac and cheese burger. That ship will come in eventually!
