Chicago treat: Ice cream by the slice coming to Arizona

• Rather than scoops, the Chicago-based chain serves five slices of ice cream stacked on a cone, "ensuring every bite delivers the perfect harmony of all five," the company says.
• The first 100 customers in Surprise will get a free Rainbow Cone, the shop's flagship offering, and all opening day guests will be entered in a raffle for a chance to win free ice cream for a year.

We asked our colleague Monica Eng from Axios Chicago for the scoop, er, slice, on what we should know about the Original Rainbow Cone. Here's what she had to say:

Flashback: Rainbow Cones emerged about 100 years ago on the far South Side of Chicago, where toolmaker Joseph Sapp wanted to give cemetery-goers a special post-grave visit snack during Prohibition.

Dig in: The signature treat features stacked slices of chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, orange sherbet and Palmer House (cherry walnut) ice cream atop a waffle cone, made possible by a special tool Sapp made to slice the ice cream, she said.

The intrigue: These flavors may sound like a dissonant combo but, for some reason, they go together beautifully, she said.

• Plus, Phoenix has more ice cream eating warm days than Chicago, she said.
